Each side of the hexagon tower is a Chinese memorial archway. The archway is a single-sided structure from Asia
consisting of a crossbeam and two columns. The complicity of the archway is determined
by its purpose, location, or creation time. This similar structure can be found
throughout Asia countries like Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. In Japan, a similar
structure is called Torii. Torii is used for Shinto (religious) purposes to
distinguish between ordinary regions and sacred realms. In China, the archway
is often used for celebrating the festival, or significant events, or like in
Japan, to distinguish regions but not for a religious purpose.
The Chinese people also consider
the ruins of St. Peter in Macau to be an archway because only the front of the
church has been preserved, and the front is a single side composed of columns
and beams. Archway is a very playful structure that can also be built modernly.I want to develop my archway based on my beliefs and where
I am.
In Buddhism, people's perception
of the outside world is divided into six types. They are vision, hearing,
smell, taste, touch, and mind. Buddhism believes that people's troubles come
from external stimulation through these six human perceptions. So, Buddhism
asks people not to use their feelings to attack themselves. To minimize the
damage perception does to us, we should ignore our perception as much as
possible, but focus on our life goals. Like we shouldn’t care whether our
muscles hurt while working out. I created a hexagonal tower to correspond to
the six perceptions and then separated the outer and inner towers to express
self and the outside world.
The whole structure is learned from the ancient Chinese tenon and mortise structure, and using a Japanese hand saw, the sculpture can be stabilized without the use of nails.
